This collection not only marks a significant victory for the brand but also reflects a unique and adaptive approach in response to the challenges posed by the pandemic.
Design Adapted to the New Reality
The Covid-19 pandemic forced a shift in fashion week dynamics around the world, leading to the need for compact and efficient transportation of collections. Inspired by this need, Satoshi Kondo of Issey Miyake created an ingenious solution: a wooden transport box that holds the entire SS21 collection. This design not only minimizes transport space but also highlights the functionality and innovation that the brand consistently promotes.
Functionality and Innovation
The "UNPACK THE COMPACT" collection is a testament to Miyake’s practical and innovative approach. The pieces are known for their functionality, with lightweight and quick-drying properties that ensure a wrinkle-free journey. Kondo developed silhouettes that can be folded, stacked, tied, and rolled, maximizing space efficiency and versatility. Highlights include zigzag-knit garments, lightweight jackets that repel water and wrinkles and can be transformed into bags, and pieces that take on 3D forms, molding to the body like shells.
